It is very difficult for me to remember sometimes that I am human. I don't have magical powers and am not all knowing all the time. I have many frailties and it is only by grace that I can wake up each day, move through the day accomplishing what I can and lay down to rest at night.

...and get up tomorrow and do it again...

I forget that life is a gift to be lived fully....to love, and enjoy to the best of my ability moment to moment.

I am grateful today to be alive and awake.

I borrowed the poem below from my virtual friend Angela Wales Rockett who has also borrowed it from Rumi. It is just what I needed today....

A New Moon~ A New Beginning

2011 will be, for me, a clean slate. Major decisions that I have been making of late have been coincided with the natural world, ie, winter solstice/eclipse/red moon on the eve of filing my divorce and now, a new moon on the eve of my court hearing. It has occurred to me that these are not just mere coincidence, but very purposeful and powerful intentions that the Universe is in it and supports these decisions.

The old saying goes, you don't know what you've got until you loose it. I lost myself for a great while by giving my power away to someone else for too long. Someone who did not value me and used that power to control and abuse me. I stayed too long thinking that I could help someone else find their way in this world when all the while I was becoming lost. So lost. I became the very thing that I disliked the most.

I realize now how much I lost. And it is humbling. The Universe has been waiting for me to take that first step back home and is welcoming me with open arms. I am grateful.

Today's Reminder:

I have the right to free myself from any situation that interferes with my having a decent life and pleasant experiences. Every human being is entitled to live without fear, uncertainty, discomfort. I will take a firm stand and hold fast to whatever decision I make to help myself and my family.

God guide me to make the right decision and give me the fortitude to cling to it against all pressures and persuasions.

World Upside Down Series

it has been an interesting exploration in abstraction and balance

there are 7 in the series so far ~ not all of which are on my website yet but there are more to come!

Necessity is the Mother of Invention.

It's been a tough couple of months for sales and with money being tight for me, I found myself at a loss for things to paint on. Having plenty of these used wax covered palette papers lying about with patches of bright colored oil, wax and micas that I mixed using a brayer for my larger paintings on board...I got to thinkin'....'surely I can do something with all this left over material'.

Sooo....I started tearing.

Pretty soon I had a pile of torn colored papers in all sizes and shapes lying about. Then I started arranging...and rearranging....and rearranging. Finally, I started seeing some harmonies and balances from all the chaos on the table.

After about two months of tearing, arranging, rearranging, combining, tearing, rearranging some more...the ideas expanded and formed into this new series World Upside Down. They all can be viewed as I present them or upside down and they still 'read' as a landscapes of an inner sort!

I am currently preparing for The Festival of Fine Arts on Tybee Island, GA scheduled for this weekend Oct. 16 & 17. This new collage series will be in the show along with my new oil & wax paintings....come to see in person and say hello...I'd love to see you!

This month’s cover art, entitled “Perceive”, is one in a series called Inner Landscapes by Savannah artist Ruth Hunter. This series of paintings sets out to explore facets of one’s unconscious. Our cover, only half of the original painting, reveals the nuances of associations with other humans.

“My inspiration for this piece was relationships between people and perceiving the ‘other’, how sometimes perceptions can be clouded,” Hunter explained. A person can either reveal or conceal layers of their personality, just as the layers of color shroud the figure in the painting. “Red is a powerful color, revealing strong emotions. The colors on top, like the lavender, create a veiling effect, representing a clouding of perception. This is where the title came from. We all have strong emotions, but we try to bury them at the same time,” Hunter continued.

Hunter utilizes these layers of color as part of her distinct style of painting using oil and wax. She starts her palate with the three primary colors, red, blue, and yellow, but what happens next depends on her mood. “Choosing which colors to start with is intuitive, and has to do with how I’m feeling at that moment. I watch how colors interact and change as I layer them, and images jump off as I lay down the colors. It’s like a dialogue with the painting. When shapes come forward, that’s when the painting appears to me.”

“I always wanted to be an artist from the time I was very young. I drew constantly. Whenever I would visit someone’s home, I would immediately absorb myself into whatever pictures they had hanging on their walls.” And indeed, since 1992, Ruth Hunter has worked as a full-time artist. Combining formal training with practical experience, Hunter developed a gestural approach to drawing quick portrait sketches in tourist destinations such as The West End Marketplace in Dallas, the beach at St. Augustine, Florida, and City Market in Savannah.

With an ardent interest in mythology, psychology, and the spirituality, Hunter immerses herself through her Inner Landscapes paintings. Combining abstract elements, color and emotion with the human figure, Hunter conveys the dreamlike world of the subconscious. “I believe wholeheartedly that dream time, the collective unconscious, archetypes, the myths, serendipity, the happy accident are all part of an inner landscape that each of us shares. I get to peek in and pull out a picture of it. My work reflects a personal, yet universal, expression of raw human emotion, giving the viewer a window through which to visually engage their own inner journeys,” Hunter affirmed.

'Dark Road'

'Dark Road' is the painting that kicked off the start of my recent series A Sense Of Place. The painting has won an Award of Merit at the 2nd Annual Savannah Art Association's Arrivals and Departures Show at our new gallery space in the Savannah/Hilton Head Airport. Here are the Judge's comments:

Judge Marcia Neblett said: The simplicity and texture in this piece is profound. The technique is rich and compels in its layering. It seems to tell a personal story and that is special to see.

Judge Ahren Wert said: Highly creative texture adds to the design. Simplistic composition adds a much deeper feeling of division.

A CHANGE A-COMIN'...

In an effort to reveal more about my inner process on painting, announcements and events will be located on the side bar on my blog page from now on. I realize that I have been spending too much time with creating blog posts on these things when they are better served in other areas on the events page on my website and facebook events.

Sooo....with that said...I have found myself working in a "series" which is something that I usually don't do. for years, my main focus in painting and image making has been conveying an emotion (or emotions) through color and the figure (or gesture). In a sense, I suppose, that would be considered a 'series'...but in a broader way which is my body of work. I find myself narrowing down my focus. Not such a bad idea really.

Perhaps this 'Sense of Place' is because I have been dealing with the recent separation from my husband of 17 years. I am faced with living and rearing my teenage daughter on my own. Being on my own for the first time in my adult life...(yikes!). My work has always been about the journey..the search for belonging. But I feel something coming in those questionings that is more specific...

Portrait Sketch Techniques~A Gestural Approach @ Gallery 209 Brunswick, GA!

I have been a full time working artist for nearly 20 years. My college training was Classical with heavy emphasis on Life Drawing. I continued my art career as a portrait quick sketch artist, honing my draftsmanship through the development of my own approach to the head study. Gleaning heavily from my college life drawing experiances, I have developed a 'direct' approach with the combination of site mapping spatial relationships in facial structure and incorporating negative space along with a quick/loose gestural drawing.

Join me as I teach...

site mapping~putting the features together like a puzzle

shading and negitive space

the importance of holding your 'instrument' to maximize freedom of movement~gestural drawing

key factors in capturing character

Students will need to bring:

a sturdy drawing board and clips to hold paper in place

your favorite soft lead pencil, a kneaded eraser, and a sharpener

I will provide paper

This class is for those with a basic knowledge of how light effects objects and for those who wish to expand their drawing skills to the portrait. Students will be drawing upright on an easel which the gallery will provide unless you have your favorite easle then bring that! We will be working with a live model.

This class will be held at Art Downtown 209 Gallery in Brunswick GA on May 22, 2010 from 1pm to 4pm~$89 per person

With “Inner Landscapes,” contemporary artist Ruth Hunter manages to brilliantly convey the connection between raw human emotions and the interplay of color and texture. Exploring the dreamlike world of the subconscious, Hunter brings that concept forward, using color as her catalyst, her work beautifully figurative. “I never work with an idea in mind, I just start to paint and let the color guide me. The stories develop as I work. It's very much a conversation between me and the painting,” she said.

Hunter's exhibition coincides with The Island Writers Network book signing at Picture This Gallery from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and the island's popular Gallery Hop, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 14th.

“The evening seemed perfectly suited for an opening reception of Inner Landscapes,” said Mira Scott of Picture This Gallery, adding, “Particularly Ruth's work, which is very engaging with viewers, full of mood and emotion, beautifully executed.” Inner Landscapes will be on on view through January 30th.

Working primarily in the mediums of oil and wax, Hunter will show 30 paintings, ranging from large canvases, to works on masonite, luane, and paper. “I love the translucent quality the wax gives the paint and the ability to build up layers easily. I can work continuously without stopping,” Hunter said.

In Recurring Dream, the reclining figure is on the verge of change, according to Hunter, who explains her work as intuitive. “The golden colors beneath are symbolic of change and rejuvenation, while she is in turquoise, in flux between two worlds. The red over it is a strong passionate color. It seems as though the reclining figure has been here before. The title just kept insisting, as I was painting it. Even my titling is intuitive in that sense,” Hunter said.

The Savannah artist finds her palette turning more toward the reds these days. Having studied fine art in Dallas, Texas, she began her early career as a portrait artist, later finding her painting heavily influenced by the figure.

Her work reflects the influences of colorists such as Mark Rothko's color field paintings, with the sense that viewers can walk right into them, along with Marc Chagall's dreamlike imagery, and Gustav Klimt's disproportion of the figure. Hunter uses the figure to tell a story, emotions by color, the concept dreamlike.

A little note from Ruth....

2010 will be an exciting year for myself and my daughter, Nina, 13 and soon to be 14. We have been through a lot in the past couple of months..many life changes have taken place, and we are optimistic about this coming year! Now that Nina is being home schooled, we have decided to take a cross country trip, just her and I, camping, hiking, and enjoying each others company. Nina wants to go to Forks, Washington and go hiking...she has some vague memories of Seattle from when she was very small and would love to revisit the area. When she was little, between 18 months and 5 years, my husband and I would travel the country every summer in a camper or RV, street performing along the way. Unfortunately, for Nina, she doesn't remember a whole lot about those days except through photographs.

So, Nina and I have decided to fund our trip to Washington State from the sales of my paintings through Picture This Gallery!! I am grateful to Mira for providing me with such a wonderful opportunity to show my work in Hilton Head and giving me my first One Man Show in three years...and I owe her many, many thanks..what a wonderful, generous spirit she is!!

IT'S A DO-OVER!!!

Last month I was scheduled to do an artist talk & demo for my friends and colleages at The Savannah Art Association but had to cancel at the last minute because the gas pump went out suddenly in my truck....I was pretty heartbroken myself!! ...and disappointed ....and embarrassed ....not to mention really really PO'ed.....ggggrrrrrrr....

These were done with oil pastel on some scrape mat board....I used a fine pumice gel to give the smooth mat board surface some tooth to paint on...

Exciting things are coming up in 2010!

I have two exhibitions coming up showcasing my 'Inner Landscapes'...one, 30 day guest show at Gallery 209 in Brunswick, GA, slated for March...and one, 90 day exhibition at Love's Jazz & Art Center in Omaha, NB, mid September through mid December!!!

I am very excited about both shows and feel so honored to have been asked to share my work at these wonderful galleries!!

Art Squared Savannah!

ArtSquared Savannah will be a weekend celebration of the arts in Savannah. On Friday evening, City Market will come alive as the Art & Soul of Savannah. The countless galleries will stay open into the evening while you take pleasure in the sights, sounds and tastes of City Market. On Saturday, guests can enjoy a Palette to Palate Gallery Hop throughout the Historic District. At each gallery sample Southern delicacies and wines while enjoying the sounds of jazz and classical music by local musicians. On Sunday, you will be treated to a Gospel Brunch at the Jepson Center featuring Mt. Zion Baptist Church "Voices of Praise." In addition, take a trolley, walking, hearst or many other wonderful tours the city has to offer to round out the cultural experience.

Hello all!

Just wanted to let everyone know that I have my work in The Gallery in Beaufort, South Carolina! The owner, Deanna Bowdish is an amazing artist in her own right and has graciously taken a few of my pieces on consignment! We are very excited about our collaboration and plans for a two man show for artist/friend/colleague Roeder Kinkel and I are being discussed for the coming year!!

I couldn't be more happy about it if I tried!! =D YEAH!!!!

Fine Arts on the River

Fine Arts on the River is an outdoor festival held every year around this time in Savannah, Ga on historic River Street in Rousakis Park.

The show will be open April 24 & 25, 9am-9pm and April 26, 9am-6pm

I will be setting up my booth April 23, preparing for judging.

The Awards Reception begins at 7pm!

My painting philosophy in a nut shell....

Color and emotion are the major focus of starting a painting. I rarely pre-plan or have an idea in mind before I start. The action of the application determines along with color, the emotional thrust of the piece. Each painting is multi-textured with layer upon layer of pigment. As each piece evolves, I watch how the colors interact, creating, of course, new shades and tones through which shapes (images) begin to emerge. As I begin to see an image or images, an inner dialogue with the painting begins...subtle emotional responses to shapes and colors are internally noted...a word or phrase will come to mind...sometimes insistent...it is important than I continue on with this dialogue until the painting is finished...which could take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours and, if the image is "strong enough", I can continue with it for days....or else the image is sometimes lost.

I believe wholeheartedly that dream time, the collective unconscious, archetypes, the myths, serendipity, the happy accident are all part of an "inner landscape" that each of us share in. I get to peek in and pull out a picture of it. What I have found interesting from listening to other people respond to the images is that a painting that was done at a very bleak time in my personal life...an image that I felt reflected that...would be responded to by someone else as a very positive, even uplifting image. Therefore, opening my eyes (mind) to a broader way of experiencing that particular image.

Of course, starting a 'portrait' is another matter in that I am focused on someones image in particular...planning is required in order to capture likeness. However, I feel that with my training of honing my draftsmanship through capturing a 'likeness' quickly, I have 'stumbled' upon being able to ultimately capture a person's character or the 'soulful' part of them..which is something very few portrait artists can do. It's not all about 'realism'...it's about a feeling, a gesture, a turn of the head, a curl of the smile.....a quietness, an energeticness, something smooth, something hard edged..................................................

The Heart's Secret Knowing

(c)2005 Ruth Hunter I recently sold this painting at A.T. Hun Art Gallery this past Saturday to a very nice man who is a Chaplin in the Air Force. He had originally seen the painting in my downtown studio, Hunter/Kinkel Studios in City Market~Savannah, about 3 or 4 months ago. On return to Savannah, he decided to drop by the Studio and see if it was still there...and to his delight and surprise, it was still there...waiting for him. As we talked on the phone, he asked what inspired the image. I'm always a little nervy when trying to find words to explain where my images come from because it is often a surprise even to me upon looking at the finished work the day after it's completion.

I feel the head and the heart are connected in that much of our inner 'knowing' comes from our emotions and intuitions...not just learned experience. Without the faculty of passion, intuition, love and the vast array of emotion and feeling that go with it...the cold rationale of reason would leave us empty, or more empty...depending on how you look at it...within the realm of all the
learning that life requires of us.

The head and the heart must work to together to nurture the soul.

One without the other would drive us to our own demise.
